Yes a unvented cylinder should be serviced every year ideally with the boiler to ensure safe operation.

As the name suggest a vented cylinder has a vent pipe which discharges into a water tank above allowing the water to expand back into the tank. A unvented cylinder has an expansion vessel installed to allow for water expansion when the water is heated up.

They both have there pros and cons, the unvented cylinder usually gives a higher water pressure due to being fed by mains water pressure and no need for a pump to be installed. Vented cylinders are tank fed which will impact the water pressure at the taps.
